Composting sounds like something only people with a big backyard can do, but that is not true. A small bin under the sink or on a balcony is enough for one household.
What you can compost
Vegetable peels, fruit scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and dry leaves all work well. Avoid meat, oil, and dairy, these smell bad and attract pests in a small space.
A simple setup
- Use a small bin with a lid, or a bokashi bin if you want something made for indoor use.
- Add scraps in layers, mixing wet items (peels) with something dry (torn cardboard or dry leaves).
- Stir it every few days so air gets in and it does not start to smell.
After a few weeks, you get a dark, rich material you can mix into your potting soil. Your plants will use it as natural food, and you throw away less kitchen waste. It is a small habit, but it adds up over time.
